1940’s Santa Monica, California. WWII was in full swing and the Santa Monica Pier was bustling with locals, tourists, and fishermen. This is when June Scroggins, the only female certified commercial fisherman in the area, wrote “Red Hair and Green Waters”. It is primarily based on her fishing experiences as Captain of her own boat, which she built herself, along the coast of southern California, mixed in with a little romance and a little more adventure. Her daughter graciously allowed me to read the original, view numerous photos, newspaper and magazine articles about June, and turn “Red Hair and Green Waters” into a more developed narrative, while keeping June's efforts intact. I discovered that she truly was the epitome of a Renaissance woman. Although this book only represents one of the many facets of June, it’s my hope that you will dive in and enjoy her fishing endeavors as much as I have. Anchors aweigh!
