LIFEGUARD & JUNIOR GUARD COMPETITIONS

Lifeguards are known to be the fittest and the most competitive athletes, and at Santa Monica Pier 360, the top lifeguards from around the world face off against each other in a series of winner-takes-the-glory events. The Lifeguard Surfboat 1 mile race is the historical Pete Peterson Santa Monica Mile Dory race that Bernard held since the 60’s!

Lifeguard Surf Race: Men/Women With a running start into the surf from the beach starting line, competitors swim around the course buoys and finish at the onshore finish line
Lifeguard 10’6 Paddleboard Sprint: Men/Women Lifeguards paddle the course marked by buoys, return to the beach, and run to cross the finish line
Lifeguard Ironman / Ironwoman Race Lifeguards cover an open water course that includes a swim leg, a board leg, a surf ski leg and a beach sprint finish
Lifeguard Surf Ski Race: Men/Women Lifeguards paddle their skis (similar to a kayak) around the course buoys and finish on the beach when any part of the ski crosses the finish line
Lifeguard Surfboat 3 Lap 2 Man Surfboat - 3 Lap course through the surf break, expect tumbles
Lifeguard Taplin Relay Lifeguards Relay Teams cover an open water course that includes a swim leg, a board leg, a surf ski leg and a beach sprint finish.

Beach FlagsFrom a prone starting position on the beach, competitors rise, turn and race to obtain a baton (beach flag) buried upright in the sand approximately 20 m away. Since there are always fewer batons than competitors, those who fail to obtain a baton are eliminated.
Surf RaceWith a running start into the surf from the start line on the beach, competitors swim around the course designated by buoys, returning to shore to finish between the finish flags on the beach.
Paddleboard RaceCompetitors stand on or behind the start line on the beach with their boards 1.5 m apart. At the start signal, competitors enter the water, launch their boards, and paddle the course marked by buoys, return to the beach, and run to cross the finish line.
Paddleboard RelayThe Board Relay event shall be conducted under the general rules of the Board Race event. Teams shall consist of 3 competitors, who may use the same craft, but 2 or 3 boards is preferred.
Run-Swim-RunFrom the start line, competitors run to pass around the turning flag and enter the water to swim out to and around the buoys. Competitors swim back to the beach to again run round the turning flag before running to the finish line.
